Why do we need a circular built environment?

The built environment is becoming less and less sustainable. Good practices are already in place but more needs to be done by using circular economy approaches.
Editorial Team

The built environment generates 40% of global waste, with only a third recycled. Future population growth will exacerbate this.

To counteract, a circular economy model is urged. Some sectors, like cement, steel, and aluminium, are adopting circular practices, cutting emissions and costs. However industry-wide adoption requires broader collaboration and supportive regulation.

Initiatives like the EU Green Deal encourage circular investments. Incentives such as carbon taxes can drive change, rewarding early adopters with financial and environmental benefits. Collaboration is key to realizing a circular built environment's potential.
