The Lycée pour Professions de Santé in Ettelbruck, now the largest wooden building in the Grand Duchy, is a pilot project. It is indeed the first Luxembourg public building with positive energy. It is also the first in Luxembourg to aim for a "Minergie-P- ECO" certification. In addition to the comfort of the occupants, which reaches its highest level thanks to this certification, it is also the ecological footprint of the building that has been at the centre of attention since the design phase.

When the new grammar school building was erected in Diedorf, an ‘integrated design process’ was applied, demonstrating that it is possible to plan innovatively and sustainably and still ensure that available resources are used economically and sparingly throughout the entire life cycle of a building.

Can a building produce more energy than it consumes, exclusively from renewable sources? Certainly! This is demonstrated by the experience of Casa SN (named after its owners Sara and Nicola Berlanda) which has recently become the first building in Europe - and Italy - to be certified under the Zero Energy standard of the International Living Future Institute (ILFI).

The Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) is a 24,350-square-foot education, research and administration facility at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a public garden attraction in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Designed and built to generate all of its own energy while treating and reusing all water captured on-site, the first facility in the world to meet four of the world’s highest green construction standards- now adds the distinctive BREEAM Outstanding In-Use rating to its resume.

This 600 square-metre plot was used to erect a new service centre that would not only encompass a bank branch but also consultation rooms for customers and staff. Overall the building spans a total usable floor area of 1800 square metres. The energy consultant used dynamic computer simulations and local climate records to design the building and select materials.

Located between the Bank of England and St Paul’s Cathedral, Bloomberg’s new European headquarters occupies 3.2 acres and will provide approximately 1.1 million square feet of sustainable office space. Clad in traditional stone and bronze, the building is sympathetic to its context and will improve the surrounding public realm.   Innovation Highlights:

This is a project involving the transformation of an old farmhouse in the foothills of the Alps: the aim was to create a sustainable and (as far as possible) self-sufficient surplus-energy building.  The Langes Haus development should also be able to operate entirely on local renewables.

This extension to a School of Design & Environment building at the National University of Singapore is an outstanding example of a net zero-energy building (NZEB) in the tropics. The five-storey building is home to labs, design studios and workshops used by the departments of architecture and design. Construction of the building was optimised to facilitate lateral ventilation and comfortable natural light. An integral aspect of net zero-energy consumption is that conventional approaches to air conditioning have to be challenged.

The university city of Freiburg is home to an innovative city hall that is now the biggest surplus-energy building in Europe. The building boasts outstanding thermal insulation that allows for low-temperature heating and high-temperature cooling. To minimise energy demand, the building is fitted with a ventilation system that uses heat recovery. The building is heated and cooled efficiently by using energy in the ground water.

As a visible sign of the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energies, a former coal silo and heating plant in Basel is covered with coloured PV modules. The entire site is under heritage protection, the remodelled building was required to match the style and colour scheme of the site.
