For a couple of decades, many in the real estate industry have been trying to make buildings “green,” replacing conventionally made materials with sustainable ones and installing energy-efficient systems. Buildings have a heavy environmental footprint, so the upshot of all this tinkering has been structures that are less harmful to the planet. Now some developers are going further with “deep green” buildings that are actually good for it.

The case is one of the demonstration sites where the technologies developed within the H2020 project BUILDHEAT have been installed. The building is a large multifamily house in a small quarter in the outskirts of Zaragoza. It has 53 dwellings of two main sizes (i.e. 85 m² and 55 m²) distributed in 5 staircases on 4 floors. The building was constructed in 1988, is owned by Zaragoza Vivienda, the social housing Agency of Zaragoza, and is used for sheltered housing.

The idea is to introduce energy saving measures in 60,000 households per year until 2030, local media reported. The government will subsidize up to 85% of each investment while the maximum amount per household will be EUR 50,000, according to the Institute of Energy for South-East Europe. The start of the program is planned for this fall, while similar measures could be introduced for public buildings, tourism, and industry in the next phase.

he Ministry of Infrastructure said its forthcoming Energy Efficiency Act would regulate the field in Slovenia and that some provisions in the draft match the Energy Act. Others have been amended or added in order to transpose European legislation into domestic law. The government also prepared a proposal for the long-term strategy for energy renovation of buildings until 2050 and launched a public consultation process in accordance with the requirements in European Union directives.

Energy-efficient upgrades to HVAC systems at schools and other critical buildings can prevent the spread of COVID-19. Federal funding and tax incentives to make these building upgrades could catalyze a market already projected for growth. In July, the House of Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee released a report which was highly critical of the current lack of progress in building energy efficiency work, particularly in England. The report urged a seven-fold increase in the installation rate. “A major upgrade of the energy performance of the UK’s entire building stock will be a fundamental pillar of any credible strategy to reach net zero emissions, to address fuel poverty and cut energy bills,” the committee told the government.”
