The Commission is in the process of updating some of the content on this website in light of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. If the site contains content that does not yet reflect the withdrawal of the United Kingdom, it is unintentional and will be addressed.

Concept and objectives:   Thermal insulation of construction and building elements has become the most important measure to enhance energy savings in new and existing building stock. Stricter regulations (such as 2019/2021 EU Buildings Directive) have led to the use of huge thicknesses of standard insulation, almost always EPS and XPS.   An efficient use of a porous cementitious system as a thermal insulation material depends mainly on its air content.

Renovating historic buildings for a low-carbon built heritage   Universally recognised as emblems of many cities, historic buildings account for a quarter of Europe’s existing construction. Retrofitting such buildings presents many opportunities for reducing carbon emissions but can also present many challenges for preserving historic and aesthetic traits and as such, particular and specific care is vital.

Concept:   Concrete is a composite material made up of a mixture of aggregates and paste.   The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and Portland cement. Cement makes up around 10–15 % of concrete.   Through the hydration process, the cement and water harden and bind the aggregates into a rock-like mass.

Concept:   Old buildings in seismic-prone areas are increasingly vulnerable to earthquakes.   They are also high energy consumers due to their outdated energy designs. Existing retrofitting methods for old buildings treat structural and energy issues separately, disregarding a holistic approach.
