Opportunities and challenges for renewable energies
The proposal for a revised Directive on renewable energy from the European Commission includes a new article on district heating and cooling. This article (Article 24) also foresees the non-discriminatory access to district heating and cooling systems for renewable heating and cooling supply. Some proponents expect an important push for renewable energy from this provision. Others see severe problems due to the essential differences between electricity and district heating grids.

This brochure published by the Danish Energy Agency, the Danish Board of District Heating and the Danish public-private partnership State of Green, provides information about the history of district heating in Denmark. It describes the main characteristics of district heating systems in the country, which mainly rely on cogeneration of heat and power and from the combustion of waste and natural gas. It explains the process for public heat planning and for approval of projects by municipalities.

“BUILDING AND DISTRICT Thermal Retrofit and Management Solutions.”
The THERMOSS project aims to produce an outstanding contribution to the wider deployment of advanced building heating and cooling technologies in the EU, addressing the challenge of 30% energy consumption reduction in buildings and 20% in districts.
THERMOSS was funded by the European Commission under its HORIZON 2020 programme for Energy-Efficient Buildings. Twelve partners from EU and Switzerland will collaborate for the 42 months of the project duration.
