Local production of energy plays an important role.
The energy production and consumption data in Central Finland shows that half of the energy consumed in the region is renewable. Altogether, renewable energy corresponds to 50% of total energy consumption in 2016. Renewable energy consumption has increased significantly by 19% from the year 2004.

The EU funded CITYOPT project (Holistic simulation and optimization of energy systems in Smart Cities) aims to make cities smarter through applications and guidelines supporting efficient planning, detailed design and operation of energy systems in urban districts. People spend up to 90% of their lives indoors, so it is perhaps not surprising that the quality of the environment created has a significant impact on their health and well-being. What is perhaps even more surprising is that the indoor air quality of some buildings, including modern low energy buildings, has been shown to be poorer than urban outdoor air quality.
