The EU Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) initiative has just published the topics for its upcoming third call for proposals.   In the third call for proposals, which will be launched in December 2017, interested candidates will be able to develop and submit projects under the four following topics: Adaptation to climate change

The Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) are at the core of cities’ commitment to the Covenant of Mayors. They are the documents Covenant Signatories rely on to reach their CO2-reduction objective, which amounts to an average 29% according to the first batch of plans analysed by the European Commission’s  Joint Research Centre!

May 7, 2014.  Swedish capital-city Stockholm has recently unveiled an ambitious objective for 2050: becoming a fossil-fuel free city! Stockholm joined the Covenant of Mayors in 2008 and has been showing the way towards the energy transition for many years now. It notably was the first city to receive the European Green Capital title in 2010.

On 4 April 2014, a partnership agreement was signed between the French Region of Franche-Comté and the banking group BPCE. This partnership is aimed at strengthening financial support to private investments (from individuals, SMEs, condominiums) to improve the energy performance of buildings.The agreement will help the Region implement its "Sustainable Building Plan", the objective of which is to boost energy retrofitting of buildings to reach low-energy standards.

To assist municipalities in finding ways to finance their sustainable energy initiatives, the Covenant of Mayors will soon set up a Working Group on Finance. The aim of this group is to build bridges between cities and European funding programmes, as well as other private and public finance providers, ultimately channelling more funds (beyond grants) towards municipal projects.

On 26 February 2014, the European Commission launched a Call for Proposals worth a total of €8.25 million for the regional programme "SUDEP - Sustainable Urban Demonstration Energy Projects”. This Call is open to local authorities from Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

The IEE-funded project Meshartility is helping 74 municipalities across 12 European countries to collect relevant energy data for the development of their Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs). Accessing detailed data on energy production and consumption in their territory is a crucial first step for Covenant signatories to identify which are the sectors where the energy transition efforts should be concentrated.
