The 2016 Clean Energy for all Europeans package of the EU Commission has reinforced the position of energy efficiency policies in the EU’s political agenda. One of the three key objectives of these proposals is to “put energy efficiency first” in the EU’s energy and climate legislations. European policymakers consider energy efficiency to be crucial in reaching the EU’s long-term energy and climate targets.

Over the last 10 years, the importance of energy efficiency in European policy has steadily increased. Today, energy efficiency is a key element on the EU’s political agenda. Policy makers are progressively recognising energy efficiency as a suitable means to address the triple challenge of economic recovery, energy dependency and climate change. Starting in 2006, Energy Efficiency Watch (EEW) projects accompanied this process.

On 14 March 2017, EUROSTAT, the statistical office of the European Union, issued a press release on the share of renewables in the EU Member States (MS).   According to the press release, in 2015, the share of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy reached 16.7% in the European Union (EU) nearly double 2004 (8.5%), the first year for which the data are available.
