Web suite of building energy simulators that model energy, comfort, and daylighting performance, and give estimates of the long-term cost of utilities. The simulations restrict flexibility in order to offer users greater ease-of-use and speed. The tool can be quickly mastered by non-technical designers, and runs fast enough to allow them the scope to experiment with many different versions of a design during a single sitting.

Homeowners in Birmingham, Sunderland, London Borough of Sutton and Stroud will be testing out new ways to finance whole house energy makeovers under the Government’s £4m Pay As You Save scheme. Following an open competition, Birmingham City Council, Gentoo Sunderland, British Gas, B&Q UK and Stroud District Council have been chosen to deliver individual projects in the first ever UK trials. The design of Spirehuset makes use of both cross and stack natural ventilation principles. Stack ventilation operates with lower air inlets located in the windows, at a normal window height, and upper exhaust openings located in the roof. The air enters smaller zones, on the periphery of the building. Air moves from these to the large common room, located in the centre of Spirehuset. To encourage the stack effect, the roof of the common room is designed to be higher than those of the other rooms.
