The Symposium, originally planned for 18-20 May 2020 in Bologna (Italy), has been rescheduled for 18-20 November 2020 and converted to a virtual event due to the COVID-19 emergency. Although the health and safety of our participants is our top priority, we remain strongly committed to continuing to foster the diffusion of scientific knowledge, even in these difficult times. This is the reason why we have decided to convert SUM 2020 to a fully virtual conference.
The event will be partnering with another prestigious IWWG event: Venice 2020 – 8th International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, already scheduled to take place from 16-19 November 2020.
To achieve a virtuous application and optimization of current practice, urban mining and circular economy are dependent on the appropriate combination of three worlds (TRIANGLE concept): research and technology (private and public) / administration, economy and industry / policy and regulation. This combination is equally important in other fields of waste management, although is of paramount relevance for a Circular Economy. SUM 2020 will focus on all relevant and innovative aspects relating to these three worlds.
Advantageous conditions will be offered to companies wishing to display their practical experience and innovative technologies. Meeting opportunities will also be created to foster cooperation between those involved in industrial production and material recycling.

SUM 2020 is going virtual!
This year's edition of the Symposium will be held as a fully virtual event from 18-20 November 2020.
Since the moment we decided to move the conference online, we invested our efforts in the setting of an excellent virtual platform that would turn all contents into a truly interactive experience for the participants, easily accessible from any place around the world.
This choice has proved to be truly successful, as we received more submissions than any previous edition of SUM! Paper proposals have been submitted from 40 different countries all around the world, attesting that recovering resources from waste and promoting a circular economy is of the utmost importance in today's society.
The daily programme of SUM 2020 is now richer than ever, with a newly added 6th parallel track featuring special sessions devoted to EU Projects, companies and poster discussions.
Our goal is to continue to foster the diffusion of scientific knowledge, by providing innovative solutions for sharing and presenting research works, best practices, case studies, as well as for networking and meeting with colleagues.
The virtual platform that will host SUM 2020 is provided by Conference Compass, a company specialized in online meetings, that works with the largest medical and scientific societies in the world, including Elsevier.
Through our platform, accessible from any device (phones, tablets and computers), attendees will be able to:
- Watch all presentations, both live and on-demand after each session
- Join live discussions, roundtables and Q&A moderated chats
- Browse through all e-posters and watch the discussions by their authors
- Network with other attendees via chat and video calls (both 1:1 or group)
- Browse through exhibitors profile pages and connect with companies representatives
- Re-watch every session and presentation even after the end of the conference
