  The Covenant of Mayors (CoM) was launched in 2008 by the European Commission to support the efforts deployed by local authorities in the implementation of sustainable energy and climate policies. At 4 September 2016, 6201 local authorities from 54 countries had joined the initiative, representing 213 million inhabitants.

This Global Status Report by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GABC) reconfirms the significance of building energy consumption as a contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It also shows that efforts to decarbonise the building sector through the implementation of comprehensive policy frameworks and the deployment of existing energy efficient technologies and building design approaches can deliver positive economic, social, health and environmental benefits.

On 15 October 2016, in Kigali, Rwanda, 197 countries struck a landmark deal to reduce the emissions of powerful greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), in a move that could prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of this century.

On 5 October 2016, the European Parliament approved the retification of the Paris Agreement in the presence of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, the United Nation's Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the President of COP 21 Ségolène Royal. With the Parliament's approval, the political process for the European Union to ratify the Agreement is concluded.

On 30 September 2016, EU ministers, in a historic move, approved the ratification of the Paris Agreement by the European Union. The decision was reached at an extraordinary meeting of the Environment Council in Brussels. This decision brings the Paris Agreement very close to entering into force.

The first edition of Climate Chance will take place from 26 to 28 September 2016, at La Cité, in Nantes, France. Local authorities, associations, trade unions, scientific organisations and citizens are invited to this meeting, which aims to enable a picture to be drawn of the state of action worldwide regarding the fight against climate change, exchanges to take place to explore in depth the successes and difficulties, to promote the pooling of experience and innovations, and to highlight the opportunities that arise from this resolute fight against climate change.
