The Horizon 2020 funded DREEAM project (Demonstrating an integrated Renovation approach for Energy Efficiency At the Multi-building scale) aims to show that renovating at a larger scale opens the opportunity for a better integration of renewable energy and is generally more cost effective. The project demonstrates a multi-building and single owner renovation approach that can achieve a 75% reduction of total energy demand.

Demand response (DR) offers the path for consumers to change their normal energy consumption patterns in response to significant variations in energy pricing over time. An effective and wide scale implementation of DR may lead to lower energy demand during peak hours and minimize energy associated costs and outages. DR can be more cost-effective than adding generation capabilities to meet the peak or occasional demand spikes. The underlying objective for an effective wide implementation of DR is to actively engage users in modifying their consumption.

Building Up SME Energy Productivity   On their own, SMEs don’t consume huge amounts of energy. But collectively, their energy demand is a different story. The IEA estimates SMEs consume around 13% of total global energy demand (that’s 74 exajoules for those keeping track). Yet, approximately 30% of that demand could be eliminated by cost-effective energy efficiency measures, such as implementing energy management software. That would save more energy than Japan and Korea consume in a year!

How to mobilise the occupant? The sense of control   The sociological feedback from the survey “Sociocube”, a study led on the first edition of the CUBE 2020 contest (a one-year energy efficiency competition between buildings), shows the basic psychosocial factors to achieve environmental friendly behaviour change at work from employees. Sociologists have notably addressed the issue of the “perceived behavioural control”, which is the liberty and self-determination that people feel when considering a behavioural change.
