The GRETA project aims at demonstrating the potential of shallow geothermal energy in the Alpine Space. This kind of tools helps fostering the integration of this technology into future energy plans at different administrative levels.

A Trinomics led consortium, on behalf of The European Commission, will be delivering a conference in Brussels on 20 September 2018 on geothermal renewable energy research, development and technologies.
The complimentary conference will provide insights into the impacts of R&D funded through the EU Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation; including providing access to the Geothermal Renewable Energy R&D Impact Report and an opportunity to influence the recommendations to increase future R&D impacts.

The Horizon 2020 funded project GEOCOND (Advanced materials and processes to improve performance and cost-efficiency of Shallow Geothermal systems and Underground Thermal Storage) will develop solutions to increase the thermal performance of the different subsystems configuring Shallow Geothermal Energy Systems (SGES) and Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES), combining different material solutions under the umbrella of sophisticated engineering, optimisation, testing and on-site validation.

The City of Stuttgart plans to implement a geothermal system into a new tunnel (Rosensteintunnel) in the vicinity of the city’s zoo “Wilhelma”. The geothermal heat and the waste heat of the traffic shall be used to heat one of the new buildings, i.e. the elephant house. At the same time the operation technology of the tunnel shall be cooled. The city will receive € 270,000 from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Protection, Building and Reactor Safety.
