Concept:   The computer-controlled sequential layering of materials to create three-dimensional shapes, otherwise known as 3D printing, was first developed in the 1980s. It is now used in a wide range of applications – from aerospace engineering to dental applications.   3D printing systems have also been developed for the construction industry but there are still many challenges and limitations to overcome such as scalability and working at heights.

Buildings account for around 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the European Union.   Curtains walls, associated with modern architecture and large office building stock, are often criticized for their limited insulation properties. Existing buildings, including historical ones, are responsible for up to 60% energy losses through the envelope.

Concept:   The construction industry still relies on centuries-old processes to manage complex projects. 3D printing with concrete could revolutionise construction. A lot of research on this has been conducted but very little attention has been paid to designing insulation for printed walls.

Concept:   Vulnerable communities are severely affected by natural disasters. A model for the estimation of the impact of disasters and for planning mitigation policies is essential.   The EU-funded MulHaRes project will develop a decision model to support multi-hazard resistance of residential buildings to floods and landslides provoked by heavy rainfalls.

Concept and objectives:   For the construction sector, and more globally for Non-Road Mobile Machineries, electrification is a major stake, as most of construction equipment is working with diesel engines and presents a lot of drawbacks that will not be acceptable anymore in the future: Air pollution, Emission of CO2, Noise
