The English version of the Directive 92/42/EEC on efficiency requirements for new hot-water boilers fired with liquid or gaseous fuels, as published in the Official Journal of the EU on 21 May, 1992.
This Directive, which comes under the SAVE programme concerning the promotion of energy efficiency in the Community , determines the efficiency requirements applicable to new hot-water boilers fired by liquid or gaseous fuels with a rated output of no less than 4 kW and no more than 400 kW , hereinafter called 'boilers'.

The Regional Register for Heating Systems in Lombardy Region (Italy) includes more than 3,5 millions of heating systems and it is updated daily with all the information that inspectors take from the monitoring operations (compulsory every 2 years for each heating system operating in a residential or not residential building).The open data contains the main information which was obtained during monitoring sessions carried out in the last two winter seasons (2012-2013; 2013-2014).

This publication from the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maîtrise de l’Énergie-ADEME) describes different types of heating systems for residential buildings and provides information regarding their energy performance, as well as their environmental impact and life-cycle cost. Recommendations are given concerning the criteria to choose a heating system in new and existing buildings in the French context.

DECRETO DEL PRESIDENTE DELLA REPUBBLICA 21 dicembre 1999, n. 551. Decree n. 551 updates and introduces specific corrections to the previous Presidential Decree n. 412. It imposes the requirement for installation of temperature control and metering of energy consumption systems for each apartment.

Article 14 of the Energy Performance of Building Directive (2010/31/EU) requires a regular inspection of heating systems with a boiler of more than 20 kW. As an alternative, Member States may opt for measures that ensure the provision of advice to users concerning the replacement of boilers, other modifications to the heating system and alternative solutions to assess the efficiency and appropriate size of the boiler, provided that these alternative measures have an impact equivalent to regular inspection.

This paper presents the results of the thermal and environmental performance of a new residential building, as a function of the heating system used, designed to Viseu, a moderate climate zone in Portugal.
