How can we choose the building performance simulation software that helps its users make the best decisions? This presentation explores the psychology of simulation users interacting with two similar simulation tools and tracks the different patterns of design exploration, outcome, and user satisfaction that result. It focuses on the importance of accurate real-time feedback to enhance the abilities of designers and building analysts.

This tool is a simulation methodology for assessing the thermal performance of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS). In this simulation approach, solar radiation is treated with a detailed optical model based on ray tracing and using the software Radiance. The resulting absorbed fraction of solar radiation is included in a CFD simulation, performed with COMSOL Multiphysics, capable of modelling both heat transfer and fluid flow.

Already today buildings can be realised in the nearly zero and plus energy standard. These buildings achieve extremely low energy demands and low CO2 emissions and can be operated economically. For this reason, the motivation in the CRAVEzero project is not only based on the energy characteristics of buildings, but also on their life-cycle costs.

A large part of the stock of Italian educational buildings have undertaken energy retrofit interventions, thanks to European funds allocated by complex technical-administrative calls. In these projects, the suggested retrofit strategies are often selected based on the common best practices (considering average energy savings) but are not supported by proper energy investigations.

MOEEBIUS project faces the challenge of reducing energy consumption in the building sector, based on modelling optimization of energy efficiency in buildings for urban sustainability. Project’s ambition was to elaborate products and services that will enable the minimization of the 'performance gap' and promote customer confidence in the attractiveness of diverse energy efficiency business models and contracts, such as Energy Performance Contracting (EPC).

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is the process of creating and managing information digitally across a building life-cycle. This information included in the model is not just the 3D geometrical data such as width, height, and depth, but “object oriented” and potentially comprises further dimensions such as time (4D), cost (5D), and operation (6D).
