Does your office comply with energy standards?

Majority of offices in Brussels no longer comply with energy standards which are necessary to meet 2050 net-zero targets.

A recent report by corporate real estate group JLL reveals a concerning situation in Brussels' office buildings. An astonishing 84% of these structures fail to meet the necessary energy standards for Belgium to achieve its 2050 net-zero targets. Only 15% of the office real estate in Brussels, has earned the globally recognised BREEAM green certification for sustainability. This leaves a whopping 11 million square meters of office space uncertified.

The report underscores the urgent need for renovations in the city's office spaces and suggests that many could be repurposed for more effective uses. Since 2010, 1.7 million square meters of office space have already been repurposed, with 69% converted into residential flats. Despite being the seventh-largest office space provider in Europe, the supply of offices in Brussels has stagnated since 2010, with the slow replacement of old, non-renovated buildings and a decrease in newly built or refurbished assets.
