Researchers have discovered a way to use lampshades to purify the indoor air. This would be done by using the excess heat produced by halogen and incandescent lightbulbs to activate a process which would decompose volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs account for most of indoor pollutants, thus reducing their presence would improve indoor air quality.

Researchers are now looking to find ways to extend the use of these type of lampshades to LEDs which is a growing segment of the market.
