The ‘Social housing Meets Solar Decathlon Europe’ panel of volunteer jurors has now begun the process of selecting the Solar Decathlon project which would be potentially most useful for social housing providers. On September 26th, this award will be presented by CECODHAS Housing Europe President Kurt Eliasson at the Symposium which will be held on location at the Solar Decathlon Europe site.

Speakers will include Mr. Vicente LEOZ ARGÜELLES head of the Unit responsible for construction at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Enterprise and Industry, who has been in charge of the New Communication on the Competitiveness of the Construction sector which was published on 31st July 2012 .

The International Energy Agency will also send its expert on Buildings and Energy Efficiency Dr Yamina Saheb, head of Sustainable Buildings Centre who will present the Work of IEA in the promotion of energy retrofit as a key pillar in Member States energy strategies. The IEA as an advisor to Members States is an influential body and this is good opportunity for Housing Europe Members to have their say.

Angelo Consoli, European Director of The Office of Jeremy Rifkin will highlight the role of housing providers in the decentralisation of energy production.

The Symposium marks the official launch of the Nearly Zero Energy Challenge Project, supported by the IEE, which comes at a key time as Governments are being asked to provide definitions and roadmaps to achieve nearly zero energy buildings  by 2018 (new public buildings) and 2020 (all new buildings).
