The metabolism of the world's economy visualised. Click on the link to have a look how much we extracted, added to our stocks (buildings, infrastructures, etc.) and got rid of, in the form of emissions and waste, over the 20th century.

 

What is really impressive is to see the growth of non-metallic minerals over time (construction materials) becoming almost the double of biomass (what we eat). We can also see how little the global financial crisis impacted our resource use and the upward trend is not looking good. This visualisation was made possible by Flourish Studio and the article “From resource extraction to outflows of wastes and emissions: The socioeconomic metabolism of the global economy, 1900–2015” from Krausmann et al. 2018
