The interest of residents when renovating dwellings which are in use

The research is divided into three parts. The first part begins by answering the research question with knowledge from existing literature. Consecutively, seven renovation projects are evaluated. The last part of the research consists of a survey held by an association of house owners. The results of these three parts lead to the recommendations and an approach for high level renovation where residents do not need to leave their dwellings.

To renovate the dwellings a housing association needs the agreement of 70% of the tenants of the estate and the house-owners must take the initiative to renovate their own dwellings. Both tenants and owner-occupiers are sometimes averse to renovation or other bottlenecks which can prevent them from making this choice. Regarding this problem the following main question is researched:  How can the process, the technical solution and the realisation of a renovation be adapted so hindrances for residents to choose for a renovation will be reduced?
This graduate research has been done as part of the larger project ‘Smart and Speedy’ which has the aim to improve the larger part of the housing stock built in series. The aim is to obtain concepts for Standard Dutch built homes from the sixties and the seventies that may reduce energy use by at least 45% at an affordable rate and without much hindrance for the residents.
One of the conditions is that the residents will not need to leave their house for longer than five days, whilst the preference goes to avoiding a necessary evacuation of the premises entirely (Van Hal, 2011).
