Researchers at ETH Zurich have created a machine that controls the setting rate of concrete to offer a "seamless transition between casting and 3D printing" so that structures can be made that use less material.
The system called Fast Complexity combines two existing technologies for creating concrete forms – 3D printing concrete and casting into formwork.

Energy-efficient buildings have the potential to play a key role in EU energy transition. In the United States, several energy utilities have recently piloted and launched buildings Pay-for-Performance (P4P) programmes making use of possibilities offered by energy metering technologies that provide greater certainty over energy savings and drive improved performance.

The renovation sector is crucial for a sustainable development of the construction market. Buildings account for 40% of the energy consumed today in EU, but annual renovation rates are limited to 0.4/1.2% in Europe. Also, a large share of buildings has more than 40 years and it is not adequately heated, bringing to a low efficiency of the building stock in terms of energy and comfort1.
