The Passive House standard, as promoted by the Passive House Institute (PHI) achieves highly energy efficient buildings whose demand for heating and cooling energy can be reduced by as much as 90% compared to conventional builds. This is achieved using an envelope-first approach and considers the five principles of Passive House: airtightness, high-quality windows, climate-applicable insulation, avoidance of thermal bridges and sufficient ventilation.

The crisis of climate change is bearing down on the places and people we love. Committed to forward motion, our community works quickly to reverse this course even as a widening disaster looms on the horizon.
Yet – why do we still show up for the fight every day? What drives us? The data is bleak. The trend lines are blinding. Any sane person would have thrown in the towel. So why do we keep showing up?

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) has made several updates to its Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Standard in order to fast track carbon reductions.
Canada’s buildings are a top contributor to carbon emissions, representing 17% of Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Updates to the ZCB Standard reflect the urgent need for change.
The ZCB Standard v2 provides two pathways for any type of building to reach zero carbon.

Implementing Rapid and Dramatic Carbon Reductions in the Global Built Environment
Over the next 4 decades, the world is projected to construct 230 billion square meters (2.5 trillion square feet) of buildings, an area roughly equal to the current worldwide building stock, or the equivalent of adding another New York City to the planet every 34 days.

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is an international organization working with leaders in government, the private sector and civil society to drive further, faster action toward achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7), which calls for universal access to sustainable energy by 2030, and the Paris Agreement, which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit climate warming to below 2° Celsius.

Only a drastic reduction in global energy demand will allow an affordable manageable transition to a global energy system based on renewables and ambitious energy efficiency measures are key to meet sustainability goals. Global growth in energy use is largely outpacing decarbonisation and in 2018, primary energy intensity – an important indicator of how much energy is used by the global economy – improved by just 1.2%, the slowest rate since 2010.
