Reducing the heating and cooling sector’s emissions is critical to mitigating against changes in climate and reducing air pollution. In this regard, district heating and cooling systems can assist in scaling up renewable energy use, increasing energy efficiency, decreasing the utilisation of fossil fuels in the heating and cooling sector, and improving urban area air quality.

Concept:   The renewable transformation of heating and cooling is underway but requires innovative next-generation policies. Currently, renewables are estimated to serve just 10 % of the thermal energy demand.   The implementation of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems based on renewable energy sources (RES) is a solution that is spreading, particularly among small communities in search of energy independence.

REN21’s Renewables in Cities Global Status Report (REC) series provides an overview of the status, trends and developments of renewable energy in cities, using the most up-to-date information and data available.   The REC’s neutral, fact-based approach documents in detail the annual developments in policies, markets, investments and citizen action, with a particular focus on renewables in public, residential and commercial buildings as well as public and private urban transport.

ZERO-PLUS is a comprehensive, cost-effective approach for the design, construction and monitoring of Net Zero Energy Settlements (NZESs). The proposed approach was applied in four case studies in different climatic settings, France, UK, Italy and Cyprus.   ZERO-PLUS settlements exceed the state of art by setting performance objectives requiring improvement relative to other energy-efficient buildings.

Concept and objectives:   Thermal insulation of construction and building elements has become the most important measure to enhance energy savings in new and existing building stock. Stricter regulations (such as 2019/2021 EU Buildings Directive) have led to the use of huge thicknesses of standard insulation, almost always EPS and XPS.   An efficient use of a porous cementitious system as a thermal insulation material depends mainly on its air content.
