Over the past decade, air quality has slowly improved in many of Europe's cities, as a direct result of more robust air quality policies across various governance levels, the introduction of targeted measures and actions, and technological improvements that have reduced emissions from various sources.

The conference will address policies at all levels, from EU to cities. Attention will be given to the integration of assessment systems in policies and in the decision-making processes of public authorities. The use of assessment systems in green public procurement (GPP), funding programs, regulations, urban plans, incentive-based policies will be debated. Strategies for the harmonization of public assessment systems at building, urban and territorial levels will be also discussed.

This atlas is part of the ESPON project Alps 2050 that develops spatial visions and perspectives for the Alpine region towards the year 2050. The spatial perimeter goes beyond the Alps in the morphological sense (which is mostly congruent with the Alpine Convention perimeter) but also considers the Territorial Cooperation Programme Alpine Space and the Macro-regional strategy EUSALP.

What will happen to the NBS policy?   The so-called "nature-based solutions" (NBS) are the latest trend in the environment domain. The use of natural infrastructures, such as vertical gardens, green roofs or green walls, to tackle socio-environmental challenges has been around for decades, but only recently has it started to be systematically researched.

The aim of the LOCAL4GREEN project is to help local authorities to establish and implement innovative local fiscal policies which are geared towards promoting renewable energy sources in the public-private sector and in homes especially within the framework of the Sustainable Energy Action Plans and the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans that have been adopted by the municipalities that form part of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy.
