‘In 2011, for the first time, European investments in renewable energies were higher than for conventional fuels. Europe already produces over 3.8 GW from wind power alone!’ said Oettinger, adding that there would be ‘no sustainable economic growth without sustainable energy’. The Commissioner promised ‘more jobs in renewable energy, on top of the million we have already created’.

A number of common Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) models - shared savings and variable contract terms - are explained and a number of short case studies are outlined. It also illustrates the EPC procurement stages and identifies contractual considerations that are of particular relevance to public sector organisations.

Could you tell us about EPEC’s work, especially how it relates to investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy?EPEC was established in September 2008 as a unique cooperative initiative of the EIB, the European Commission and EU Candidate Countries and Member States. We have an international team of 18 professionals working on a range of PPP issues alongside Member States.

Mentioning a '20% increase in energy efficiency' as one of the main priorities set out in the Europe 2020 strategy for 'smart, sustainable and inclusive growth,' Hahn spoke firmly about the important role of cities in acheiving these ends:

The main aim of REScoop 20-20-20, a new IEE-supported initiative (launched in April, 2012) according to Dirk Vansintjan, the project’s coordinator, ‘... is to bring to the surface all the renewable energy cooperatives around Europe; all the pioneers responsible for these initiatives, all their expertise, and all their experiences—both good and bad.’

Hannover, 22.11.2012 – More than half of the overall world population is living in urban areas - with rising tendency. The permanently increasing urbanization can be driven to more sustainability by ecological concepts for mobility, energy-efficient buildings and intelligent energy supply. Intelligent energy supply had also been the main subject of the well-attended “Sustainable Energy in Buildings and Urban Areas” Symposium (SEBUA 2012) which took place in Kusadasi near Izmir/Turkey from October 14 – 20, 2012.

Energy Community Energy Efficiency Task Force is an expert group which supports various aspects of implementation of energy efficiency directives (including EPBD) in the Contracting Parties of the Energy Community (Western Balkan countries, Moldova and Ukraine).
