The EU’s 2030 Framework for climate and energy sets a 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990, and at least a 32% share of renewable energy consumption, as EU-wide targets for 2030. For the power system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions implies greater electrification, i.e. a greater share of electricity in the total energy mix.
