Passive House is the future. This intelligent concept marks the cost optimum over the life-cycle of a building. In conjunction with the use of renewable energies, it stands as an answer to the nearly zero-energy building goals being established by governments the world over – indeed, according to the European building directive, it is to this standard that all new builds must be constructed by 2021. It is now time to prepare for these developments. The themes presented at the International Passive House Conference will help participants do just that.

The ‘roadmap to a resource-efficient Europe’ identifies the sectors – particularly food, housing and transport – that consume most resources and outlines how the region can grow while using fewer resources. The report looks at key natural resources like raw materials, metals, energy, biodiversity and water, which have been used to fuel economic growth as if they were inexhaustible. Unveiling the region’s blueprint for the economy, Swinney said that the SNP Government wants to build on Scotland’s ‘competitive advantage’ in renewable energy to secure investment and create jobs. The Scottish Government plans to create a £70 million National Renewables Infrastructure Fund to upgrade the region’s existing renewable energy infrastructure to attract new investment in offshore renewables, which could ultimately create around 130,000 jobs.

The Aldersgate Group is a strategic coalition of businesses, NGOs, think tanks and individuals, who believe in that high environmental standards are essential for future economic growth and competitiveness. Aldersgate Group Project Chair John Edmonds said: "The skills gap in the UK economy is well documented, with one in three firms already hampered by a shortage of skilled staff, from those needed to install new technology to scientists and engineers."
