Public and non residential buildings

New standardization projects relevant to ventilative cooling applications have officially been initiated under Technical Committees (TC) in the European Committee for Standardization (CEN/TC 156) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO/TC 205) since 2017. These projects aim to make technical documents focusing on design aspects and setting criteria for ventilative cooling, and natural & hybrid ventilation systems in residential and non-residential buildings.

Various studies have shown that ductwork leakage has a major impact on energy use (i.e. increased fan energy use, heating & cooling losses etc.). However, in most European countries, it is not common to perform ductwork airtightness tests, which is probably due to the lack of awareness on the consequences of ductwork leakage. As follows, ductwork airtightness is not properly taken into account in most Energy Performance Regulations and Calculations.

The overarching ambition of the ALDREN initiative is to consolidate, promote and implement an extended harmonized procedure, based on the European Common Voluntary Certification Scheme for non-residential buildings (EVCS) and a set of relevant instruments, in order to support building deep renovation operations, all along the process, tackling its organizational, financial and technical components issues. In line with the development of the EVCS, the primary scope is focused on non-residential buildings (especially offices and hotels).

Are Energy Performance Contracts (EPC) always the best solution for energy efficiency plans of public buildings in the MED area? How to increase their diffusion? STEPPING’s partners past experience and results of MED projects developed under previous programmes, show that it is necessary to adapt this investment scheme to the conditions of the MED area, which are not comparable to those of northern and central EU countries.

The CPAS of Forest Municipality of Brussels brought together its various services there in 2005.  To preserve the façade (exterior walls, windows and doors), the walls have been insulated from the inside by 20 cm of cellulose.
