The Life for LCA LCC Level(s) project (short: LIFE Level(s)) is directed towards mainstreaming sustainable buildings in Europe through greater awareness and use of the specified indicators within the framework of Level(s), a set of common European Union indicators to address life cycle environmental performance of buildings.

For a couple of decades, many in the real estate industry have been trying to make buildings “green,” replacing conventionally made materials with sustainable ones and installing energy-efficient systems. Buildings have a heavy environmental footprint, so the upshot of all this tinkering has been structures that are less harmful to the planet.
Now some developers are going further with “deep green” buildings that are actually good for it.

Andreas Gyr remembers his first car fondly: a 1982 Ford Escort, which had the gas parts ripped out and replaced with 17 golf cart batteries and an electric motor. “It had about a 15-mile range and it topped out at like 58 miles per hour,” Andreas remembers. “I’d carry an extension cord around and plug it into friends’ wall outlets to make it home.” It might have been inconvenient, but it made him excited about the future. “It was different, it was hopeful, we charged it with solar panels!” he says.

This year marks the 15thEuropean Sustainable Energy Week EUSEW. Under the circumstances with Covid-19 the event was adapted to provide a dynamic, interactive and carefully organised online format. This effort has proved successful with more than 6300 registered participants and 4600 active online participants and some sessions of the policy conference gathering over 1500 registrations from people around the world.
