First passive house-standard educational facility operated as PPP: Seecampus Niederlausitz

Mid of February 2011 saw the official opening of the Seecampus Niederlausitz in Schwarzheide, Brandenburg. Built as a public-private partnership, this is Germany’s first school campus to be constructed to the passive house standard. Different educational facilities from the region are integrated in the building. This is intended to maximise the synergy effects that can be gained in terms of the operation and functionality. Built in the space of just 15 months, the new campus now includes a school building built to the passive house standard, a triple-court sports hall and a library that can be used by both school pupils and the public. 23 million euros were invested.
The science-oriented campus, which is situated on a 58,000 m² site adjacent to the Südteich lake, offers space for the 880 students from the Emil-Fischer High School, Schwarzheide, and Lausitz Sixth Form College. The two schools will share certain facilities such as the experiment room or specialist classrooms. The Seecampus will now be managed for the next 30 years by Dywidag, which belongs to the Strabag Group.

In addition, the requirements of passive houses also had to be fulfilled. As a consequence, the design and construction are systematically based on a compact structure that achieves an optimised building envelope. With high thermal insulation, an almost airtight building envelope, triple-glazed windows and controlled room ventilation with efficient heat recovery, the building considerably undercuts the required primary energy characteristic value of 120 kWh/m². pbr Planungsbüro Rohling AG was responsible for the architectural design.
