This Global Status Report by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GABC) reconfirms the significance of building energy consumption as a contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It also shows that efforts to decarbonise the building sector through the implementation of comprehensive policy frameworks and the deployment of existing energy efficient technologies and building design approaches can deliver positive economic, social, health and environmental benefits.

On November 2, 2016, the Climate Action Tracer (CAT) released its analysis of the building sector. "Constructing the Future: Will the Building Sector Use its Decarbonisation Tools" examines specific energy-intensive sectors. It looks at how emissions can be reduced in order to be in line with the Paris Agreement’s warming limit.

In a resolution on the EU Commission’s “renewables progress report”, voted on 23 June 2016 at the European Parliament's plenary session, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) state that although the EU's renewable energy target -20% of total consumption by 2020- has already been achieved by many EU Member States (MS), there are other MS that lag behind and must do more.
A second resolution, also voted on 23 June, says that in order to achieve the EU's energy efficiency target -a 20% gain by 2020- MS need to implement EU legislation faster, and in full.
