Ninety percent of the existing building stock in Europe was built before 1990. These buildings are in urgent need for a significant improvement of energy-efficiency through renovation.   State-of-the-art renovation solutions are available, but costly and lengthy renovation processes and incomprehensible technical complexities hinder the achievement of a wide impact at a European scale.

The engagement of stakeholders during the development process of the iBRoad project is considered of high value since the beginning. Following the stakeholders’ mapping procedure, a process that included the identification, the analysis, the visualisation and the prioritisation steps for each stakeholder, namely the levels of expertise, influence, involvement necessity and interest to the project, the first round of physical meetings took place during February and March 2018 in 8 countries.

The primary intent of this research project is to review the current state of knowledge and risks relating to the deep energy renovation of traditional buildings, which have different hygroscopic and thermal behaviors to buildings of modern construction, and which represent approximately 16% of the total housing stock in Ireland. One of the key characteristics of traditional buildings is that they are constructed of solid masonry walls that are ‘breathable’, i.e. the building fabric allows moisture to be absorbed and released cyclically.

In April last year, the City of Ljubljana agreed a public-private partnership (PPP) with a consortium of GGE and Petrol for the energy retrofitting of public buildings in the municipality. The EUR 14.9 million project will deliver energy savings of 8,245 MWh annually and a reduction of 2,956 tons of CO2 emissions each year.
