The STUNNING Renovation Hub, a virtual platform for the interactive knowledge exchange in energy-efficient building renovation, was launched by the EU-funded, Horizon 2020 project STUNNING in September 2018. It enables stakeholders throughout the value chain to share knowledge and experiences with each other through articles on their innovative refurbishment packages, replicable business models and case studies on their successful implementation.

The seismic and energy retrofitting of existing European buildings with innovative materials is addressed in this report. The need for retrofitting of old buildings emanates from their substandard design in terms of both earthquake resistance and thermal insulation. This is revealed during strong earthquakes that result in collapses and damages of old buildings and consequently in economic losses, severe injuries and loss of human lives.

ENEA, jointly with the Construction Technologies Institute of the CNR, has made available the new version of DOCET, a simplified software tool for the certification of existing residential buildings, targeted at technicians and operators of the building sector. The software, to be used for buildings up to 200 m2 without major renovations, can draft the energy performance certificate (APE), which assesses the energy efficiency and energy class of a building and includes recommendations on how to best improve the energy efficiency of the property.

The connection of a solar thermal (ST) façade system to a district heating system allows for the direct use of ST heat in the building while taking profit from the network for delivery/selling of excess heat and purchase of heat during periods of underproduction. The use of unglazed collectors for low-intrusive architectural interaction in façades is discussed.

On the one hand, historic buildings stand for a considerable part of societal energy use and the pressure to reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. On the other hand, the historic building stock is an important cultural and material resource that we need to manage carefully for the benefit of present and future generations. Thus, we must find ways to balance the needs of building conservation and energy conservation.

To keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius, accelerating a radical shift to smarter energy use is crucial. Within the private sector the transition has already begun, yet it is not happening fast enough – and millions of dollars in energy savings remain untapped.
Buildings are crucial targets for lowering emissions. They are what make up our rapidly expanding urban landscapes, their construction and architectural shape in turn shaping everyday human lives. Yet they also represent 32% of global energy consumption and a quarter of global human induced CO2 emissions.
