The eTeacher project is reaching the final stage of developing the ICT empower tools (What-if-Analysis and eTEACHER app).   What-if-Analysis is a software tool that aims at providing building users with tailored racommendations on how they can reduce building energy consumption and energy costs.

Buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. The residential sector represents 75% of the European building stock and, on average, more than 34% of CO2 emissions on cities’ territories. This sector is therefore a key action area for all local and regional authorities who are committed to ambitious energy and CO2 saving targets.

REScoop MECISE is a Horizon 2020 PDA project that aims to mobilise citizens and municipalities in the transition to a more sustainable and decentralised energy system. With support from the EASME, a consortium of established energy cooperatives developed projects for renewable energy and energy efficiency. The project also set-up a financial facilitation service for energy communities and foster collaborations between energy cooperatives and local municipalities.

To complement their peer-learning initiative, the PROSPECT programme has released 5 thematic handbooks (tackling Public buildings, Private buildings, Transport, Public lightning and Cross-sectoral initiatives) aimed at referencing and explaining innovative financing schemes for cities’ sustainable energy and climate plans.

The PROSPECT learning programme enables peer-to-peer learning in regional and local authorities in order to finance and implement their sustainable energy and climate action plans. The programme builds upon successful financing schemes implemented in cities and regions in the European Union.   It will help local and regional authorities to benefit from the lessons learnt and the experience of their peers in order to launch their own investment programme.

The workshops aimed to explore the role of the Social Sciences & Humanities (SSH) in meeting local or regional energy challenges: how do those working in energy at the local level feel SSH understandings could help them in their work? Workshop organisers were trained beforehand in participatory ‘storytelling’ methods, which were designed into the workshops in order to enable rich and diverse contributions from participants to help understand these challenges and draw out SSH-relevant themes.

Behavioural issues need to be considered in all aspects of the energy transition, from improving awareness of the benefits of energy efficiency and renewable energies, to making sure that technologies are easy to use, and that financial decisions can be made in a wellinformed manner.   The challenge is to consider how real people react to everyday decisions and situations, how they plan in the long-term, and how they therefore make investment decisions.

The project “Energiewende twinning towns” is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and carried out by the Renewables Energies Agency and the Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform. It aims at deepening or initiating exchanges between cities or communities that intend to cooperate in the renewable energy field.
