The "Smart windows" concept for historic buildings is discussed from a technical point of view including information on importance of airtight interior insulation, ventilation in an airtight building, vacuum glazing and other types (double/triple) and possibilities of retrofitting in Passive House quality?  The conclusion affirms that Passive House Windows and historic buildings are a good fit.

The document collects the solutions of internal insulation of the building envelope. In this context, particular attention is given to the expected moisture accumulation in the walls’ cross section. Particular attention was given to the materials of capillary- active inner insulation that transports the condensation back to the surface because of its inward directed capillary forces and the ability to conduct water in its pores. The water is discharged from the surface into the room.

Primary comfort and hygiene criteria related to retrofit of the historic windows are discussed.In particular, primary comfort criterion which includes u-values europe-wide and u values for different types of window glazing (single glazing, double glazing, double low-E glazing, triple low-E glazing). The report shows the correct method for the energy retrofit of historic windows taking into consideration the conservation aspects. Particularly relevant, is the different appearance of historic windows with original glazing and the correct example of refurbishment of existing windows which is presented on a tour of the center of Bolzano/Bozen.
