I wouldn’t call the first building I worked in very smart. My desk was in a low walled cube in the middle of the “cube city” surrounded by cinder block walls. The air quality depended on what section you were in, and the temperature varied every 20 feet. There were no crowd-based thermostats to keep everyone happy. Almost every air vent had a custom deflector taped on it to personalize the comfort of the one who applied it. If you were cold, your best option was to put on a sweater.

The request was made following the realisation that an overview of recent research on the job creation and macro-economic benefits of energy renovation in the EU has not been compiled in almost 6 years.

The building has been nominated for the BREEAM Energy award 2020 and it is a very ambitious construction in the city centre of Warsaw. The location was originally occupied by a block of flats of 10 floors built in 1960, that was demolished in 2017, in order to enable the construction of the new complex, more in line with the new needs of the Warsaw’s office market.

The new Central Building of Leuphana University represents an exemplary sustainable campus. It is part of the "Climate-neutral campus" project, which was nominated for the German sustainability award. The building concept and design started from an idea elaborated from a group of students within a university seminar with the architect Daniel Libeskind.

There is a real risk that COVID-19 could take the EU backwards to political fragmentation, economic stagnation and social breakdown. Alternatively, we can choose to launch common initiatives that will bind Europeans and the European Union closer together, provide the impetus for renewed economic activity shaped by the principles of the European Green Deal while addressing the inequalities in our society in an inclusive manner.
