The final version of the Integrated Design Process Guidelines have been published in Italian and are available on the website of the MaTrID Project.   These guidelines aim at providing a clear step-by-step explanation about implementing an Integrated Design (ID) process, by reducing the complexity of the design process and facilitating the interactions between the members of the design team.

The integrated design process encompasses cross-disciplinary teamwork enabling the improved integration of building, community, natural and economic systems and therefore is a key to sustainable design. The needs for further research, methodologies and validation for the integrated design process are considered by two design practitioners. A workable, replicable model demonstrating the costs and benefits is argued as having an enormous positive impact on the environment and the design and procurement processes.

This research paper examines the process of integration of tall building systems with special emphasis on sustainable buildings. The design of tall buildings warrants a multidisciplinary approach and requires the integration of architectural components, structure, vertical transportation, fire safety, energy conservation, and communication systems.

"The members of 7group and Bill Reed are examples writ large of the kind of leadership that is taking this idea of green building and forming it into reality, by helping change minds, building practice, and design process." "Fundamentals of Integrated Design for Sustainable Building offers an introduction to green building concepts as well as design approaches that reduce and can eventually eliminate the need for fossil fuel use in buildings while also conserving materials, maximizing their efficiency, protecting the indoor air from chemical intrusion, and reducing the introduction of toxic materials into the environment. It represents a necessary road map to the future designers, builders, and planners of a post-carbon world." (from the Foreword by Ed Mazria)

In the EU, a Directive was adopted according to which after the 31 of December 2020, the construction of buildings that do not meet the requirement of being ‘nearly zero (fossil) energy’ will not be allowed. Today, only a few zero-energy buildings (ZEBs) exist, and they show that their design, construction and operation is a dramatic challenge for many reasons. The first is that today’s buildings require too much energy to work and most of this energy is wasted because of their inappropriate architectural design.
