Many new largely solar-heated houses in Germany are multi-family buildings, and their number is growing, according to Sonnenhaus-Institut (Solar House Institute), an alliance of about 300 architects, planners, building companies and system integrators that specialise in the design or construction of houses where sunlight provides at least 50 % of the heat and, in some cases, electricity a year.

European Social, Cooperative and Public Housing providers aim at refurbishing 400,000 homes per year or 4 million homes by 2030.   This will decrease the energy consumption of the refurbished housing units on average by 50% by 2030, cut emissions with at least 50% and save up to €700 per year on average to each resident.   Frontrunners in energy efficiency

When it comes to heating, retiree Lucy Craig’s bungalow in north London is high tech. A self-professed gadget lover, when she refurbished eight years ago, she was keen to find the most carbon friendly methods for keeping her home warm. She settled on heat pumps.   Outside her house, all that can be seen of the pump is an innocuous metal box. Inside the machine is a closed circuit of liquid that cycles in a pipe running from the box outdoors to a water tank indoors.

By 2050 around 80% of the world's population will be living in urban areas. Currently, they occupy 3% of the Earth's surface but produce around 72% of greenhouse gases.   Growing urbanization along with climate change will have a serious impact on our life in cities in terms of air quality, warmer temperatures and higher flood risk. But solutions to reducing the environmental impact and improving people's quality of life has been found in nature.

Wednesday 9 December 2020, 14:00-15:45 CET   The current development in building energy efficiency towards nZEB buildings represents a number of new challenges to design and construction.   One of these major challenges is the increased need for cooling in these highly insulated and airtight buildings, which is not only present in the summer period but also in the shoulder seasons and in offices even in midwinter.

The 23rd webinar on the Low Carbon Economy   Every day, more than 22,000,000 m³ of hot water are consumed by European homes alone. It is a major source of energy consumption for new housing, and yet 80 percent of this heat ends up in sewers and is wasted.   Considering hot water is mostly used in showers, recovering waste heat from shower drains could be a simple way to save up to 70 percent wasted energy and related CO2 emissions.
