In Munich's Prinz-Eugen-Park district, NEST 2020 realized the residential complex with 61 condominiums, community space and underground parking. The concept combines passive house standard and wooden construction with solar power and battery storage for local use of renewable energy. Different floor plan types and sizes, community spaces and a sustainable mobility concept create a diverse offering for residents. Two 4-story point buildings and five residential blocks house townhouses and maisonette units in addition to traditional multi-story apartments.

Friday 11th June 2021, 14:00-16:30 CET   Extensive research studies in many countries have found gaps between the design intent and real-world operation of buildings, which often lead to much higher energy use in practice than was estimated at design stage. While the reasons for such performance gaps are varied and complex, IEA Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) research projects have recently been making progress in resolving them.

The current development in building energy efficiency towards nZEB buildings represents a number of new challenges to design and construction. One of these major challenges is the increased need for cooling in these highly insulated and airtight buildings, which is not only present in the summer period but also in the shoulder seasons and in offices even in midwinter. Resilient ventilative cooling can be an energy efficient solution to address this cooling challenge in buildings.

District energy is a proven solution for delivering heating, hot water and cooling services through a network of insulated pipes – from a central point of generation to end users. It requires a vast amount of energy that when sourced from fossil fuels, accounts for a major portion of a city’s greenhouse gas emissions. The EU-funded WEDISTRICT project will demonstrate an integrated district heat and cooling (DHC) network combining renewable energy sources, thermal storage and waste heat recovery at low temperatures.

The EU Renovation wave, initiated in October 2020 by the European Commission, has targeted heating and cooling as a key sector in accelerating the renovation rate of buildings in Europe to notably cut CO2 emissions. One of the main aspects is to support the penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in heating and cooling, including for district heating and cooling (DHC) networks.
