Ventilation in historic buildings is very important to foster health and comfort of the occupants as well as for the conservation of the building structure. Moreover, energy-efficient ventilation (e.g. demand controlled ventilation DCV and heat recovery ventilation HRV) can significantly reduce energy consumption.

As Europe contends with the Covid-19 pandemic, exposure to indoor air has been rising, with people spending up to 90% of time indoors. Indoor air quality is a crucial element of resilience against respiratory disease. Insufficiently burned fuel in old stoves and mold often pollute the air making buildings unhealthy to live in. These households are often the most vulnerable to price increases and decreasing job opportunities during the pandemic.

Consumers are willing and ready to play their part in the green housing transition, but they will need guidance and support along the way, writes Monique Goyens. Goyens is director general of BEUC, the European consumer organisation.   Europe’s building stock currently accounts for 36% of European greenhouse gas emissions. Addressing this will mean future-proofing our homes by thoroughly renovating them. But the complexity and expense of doing so is holding many people back.

The 2018 revision of the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) aims to further promote smart building technologies, in particular through the establishment of a Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) for buildings.  A first technical study to support the establishment of the SRI concluded in August 2018 and aimed at investigating the possible scope and characteristics of such an indicator. End of December 2018, a second technical support study was launched with the aim to provide further technical input to feed the establishment of the SRI scheme.
