Buildings account for 40% of the EU’s energy consumption and 36% of its greenhouse gas emissions. The EU knows that improving their energy efficiency is vital for achieving its 2050 climate targets under the European Green Deal.    And its recent EU Renovation Wave Strategy, which aims to double renovation rates over the next ten years, will also ensure that these renovations lead to higher energy and resource efficiency.

A project pipeline of over 30 buildings has been developed by the project of which five have been fully renovated. Like many other Eastern European countries, Latvia has a significant stock of multi-family buildings that were built between 1954 and the late 1980s, never fully renovated and bear huge energy saving potentials.

The Executive Agency for Small & Medium-sized enterprises is launching an on-line consultation regarding the future implementation of the BUILD UP Skills initiative.   Launched in 2011, the main objective of BUILD UP Skills is to increase the number of trained and qualified building professionals across Europe, to deliver building renovations offering high-energy performance as well as new Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings.

  On 21 April 2016, the European Commission announced that 189 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 26 countries have been selected for funding in the latest round of Horizon2020 SME Instrument, for Phase 1. The funding – €8.7 million in total, €50,000 per recipient– will finance feasibility studies for new products. The SMEs can also ask for up to three days of free business coaching.

A newly released report highlighted the projects main achievements together with best practices and success stories in the field of nZEB.
