CELSIUS Project
CELSIUS Project
CELSIUS is an EU-funded Smart Cities project that illustrates how cities can save energy and create a more self-sustaining energy economy through the deployment of smart district heating and cooling (DHC) systems. As lead partner Gothenburg collaborates with London, Genoa, Rotterdam and Cologne to accomplish the project’s objectives. Within this effort the CELSIUS consortium brings together excellence from 20 key partners along the value chain: cities, industries and leading universities.
Looking to have a profound and lasting impact, CELSIUS is working on many different levels, from creating awareness among politicians and various stakeholders to developing innovative ways of using DHC, striving to become a respected and influential organisation supporting the development of legislation, regulation and policies.
The CELSIUS Member Cities
In the hope of creating ripple effects across Europe, the project has now recruited 64 European cities (surpassing its original goal of 50 cities) into the CELSIUS vision, collaborating with and offering them support in developing their DHC systems. These cities share the belief that intelligent district heating and cooling systems have an important role to play in the city’s strategic energy plan.
By developing and improving their DHC, cities offer their citizens secure, reliable, efficient and more affordable heating and cooling. According to the UNEP, DHC can be up to 50% more cost effective than individual production. This is how CELSIUS works to empower sustainability, to make cities more liveable, sustainable and economically viable.
Our 30 demonstrators
The spine of the CELSIUS project comprises 30 demonstrators that set forward innovative technologies, systems and practices, covering the areas of system integration, sustainable production, storage, end-user technologies and infrastructure. They contribute to energy systems within a city that meet the present and future demands of its citizens and businesses. To promote their replicability, the knowledge gathered around these demonstrators has been uploaded to the CELSIUS Toolbox
The CELSIUS Toolbox
To best support the CELSIUS Member Cities in their efforts to become more sustainable, we have developed the CELSIUS Toolbox, a wiki basted platform, in whichtheusers can find social & technical knowledge, lessons learned and best practices compiled throughout the project. The goal is to assist the citieswith practical information necessary for the development and maintenance of their DHC systems - including technical, social, economic and legal advice.
The wiki is divided into 5 elements: the CELSIUS Roadmap, the Technical Toolbox, the Social Toolbox, the Demonstrators and the CELSIUS Cities.
CELSIUS City Supporters
With a little more than a year left of the project, CELSIUS is now broadeningthenetwork and welcoming other district energy actors to join by becoming CELSIUS City Supporters. These can be private companies, civil society actors, professional associations, research institutions, or other EU projects who share our commitment to sustainable energy use. Part of the CELSIUS network, CELSIUS City Supporters have access to the CELSIUS Toolbox to both access and upload information.
