Mini-grids are complex systems dependent on different suppliers and used in different applications, often with high regulatory uncertainty over their installation and operation. Creating a viable market for renewable-based mini-grids, with prospects of growth and long-term profitability for investors, depends on establishing trustworthy quality infrastructure (QI) for the technologies and systems involved.

Heating and cooling accounts for almost half of global energy consumption. With most of this relying fossil fuels, however, it contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. In parts of the world lacking modern energy access, meanwhile, inefficient biomass use for cooking also harms people’s health, damages the environment and reduces social well-being.

Renewable energy needs to be scaled up at least six times faster for the world to start to meet the goals set out in the Paris Agreement. The historic climate accord from 2015 seeks, at minimum, to limit average global temperature rise to “well below 2°C” in the present century, compared to pre-industrial levels. Renewables, in combination with rapidly improving energy efficiency, form the cornerstone of a viable climate solution.
