New report from BPIE – the Buildings Performance Institute Europe - highlights that more than half of EU Member States are six months late to submit their national Long-Term Renovation Strategies (LTRS), a key element of Europe’s strategy to decarbonise the building stock. Of those submitted only one is fully compliant with EU legislation.

The Concrete Initiative welcomes the New Circular Economy Action Plan and the ambitious vision of the European Green Deal. We are pleased to see that the Action Plan contains coherent, long-term measures to enhance the life span of construction works (through durability, maintenance, repair and reuse) and to increase the recycling and reuse of construction waste. The whole concrete value chain is fully committed to achieving a circular economy in construction.

The process is beginning with a review of the Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EU) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/EU and 2018/2002/EU). The review will be essential to identify how energy policies on renewables and energy efficiency will contribute in achieving the climate and environmental targets of the European Green Deal, the commission said.

The EU economy is forecasted to shrink by 7.4% this year with an uneven economic impact across the EU and the different economic sectors. The HVAC sector, which stared 2020 over expectations according to many industry representatives, was not among the most hit sectors during the crisis, although the impact of recession in the construction sector is yet to be seen. Still, as a key sector providing key equipment and services for crucial facilities, the HVAC and building sectors shall remain a strategic player in the post-covid economy and society.

New challenges are nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) and low carbon footprint. What could be in your opinion the contribution of HVAC professionals? Do you think that the HVAC professionals are sufficiently prepared for the new challenges?
