The Green Deal call aims to support with €1 billion research and innovation projects on its main priorities. The call is structured in eight thematic areas reflecting the key work streams of the European Green Deal and three horizontal areas on strengthening knowledge; empowering citizens; and international cooperation.

The COVID-19 crisis has brought the EU to a crossroads. We have difficult choices to make and immediate recovery measures to develop. There is a real risk that COVID-19 could take the EU backwards to political fragmentation, economic stagnation and social breakdown. Alternatively, we can choose to launch common initiatives that will bind Europeans and the European Union closer together, provide the impetus for renewed economic activity shaped by the principles of the European Green Deal while addressing the inequalities in our society in an inclusive manner.

As part of the European Green Deal, the Commission identified the importance of agreeing a new approach for exploiting Europe’s offshore renewable energy potential in a sustainable and inclusive way. The revised Commission Work Programme confirmed that a European offshore renewable energy strategy would be published before the end of 2020, aimed at giving a strategic direction for the ambitious development and integration of this type of energy by 2030 and 2050.

Set up under the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive, the Modernisation Fund will allocate around EUR 14 billion from the auctioning of allowances from the EU Emissions Trading System for the period 2021-2030, depending on the carbon price. Every beneficiary Member State has its own share of allowances to be used under the Modernisation Fund, as determined by the revised EU Emissions Trading System Directive.

The new changes in the European Green Deal are expected to bring many benefits to people and businesses.   Thanks to energy labels idea that help consumers to buy more eco-friendly products and save energy, or the new European Union (EU) rules that reduce the use of plastics, keeping keep public spaces, by 2018 the EU had achieved a 23% reduction greenhouse gas emissions since 1990 while growing its economy by 61%.

The European Commission has proposed a €1.85 trillion recovery plan to help the European Union exit the economic crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. How some of this money will be spent will be defined in national Recovery and Resilience Plans, which national governments must prepare to access the funding. Within this context, financing building renovation is one of the smartest moves national governments could make and will respond to societal and environmental needs and urgencies.

What is the European Green Deal?    The EU Green Deal is the new growth strategy for Europe and a dedicated roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable. The goal of the European Green Deal, presented by the European Commission in December 2019, is for Europe to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
