‘Sustainable Energy Skills in the construction sector’ is a series of webinars devoted to energy efficiency area from different perspectives. It is organized jointly by 7 EU founded projects: BIMEET, BUSLeague, INSTRUCT, HP4ALL, The nZEB Roadshow, CraftEdu and TRAIN4SUSTAIN. The collaboration was established to raise awarness about a deep need for sustainable energy skills in the construction sector. The webinar is an opportunity to share their knowledge, experiences and research outcomes with the audience from European countries.

Evidence points out that most vulnerable households face major challenges in the renovation of their homes. Lowest-income families live in most energy-inefficient homes, according to research by the Vlaams Steunpunt Wonen. This means that the cost of reaching renovation energy efficiency standards ends to be highest for those with the least.

District energy is a proven solution for delivering heating, hot water and cooling services through a network of insulated pipes – from a central point of generation to end users. It requires a vast amount of energy that when sourced from fossil fuels, accounts for a major portion of a city’s greenhouse gas emissions. The EU-funded WEDISTRICT project will demonstrate an integrated district heat and cooling (DHC) network combining renewable energy sources, thermal storage and waste heat recovery at low temperatures.

With the Renovation Wave Strategy, the European Commission aims to at least double renovation rates in the next ten years and make sure renovations lead to higher energy and resource efficiency. This will enhance the quality of life for people living in and using the buildings, reduce Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, foster digitalisation and improve the reuse and recycling of materials.
