Building sector accounts a significant percentage of total global energy-related CO2 emissions. Energy is consumed at different buildings’ lifecycle and can be analysed from different perspectives or scales. That means that competitive solutions should be found in the building sector to revolutionise energy efficiency and management in buildings.

Instead of only sustainable sports, athletes can now also park sustainably at De Meent Sport Complex in Alkmaar. Within the POCITYF project, 858 solar panels have been placed above the parking lot on the south side of the ice rink. A total of 20 electric cars can be charged thanks to 16 additional charging points. The parking lot functions threefold: for parking, generating sustainable energy and charging.

The building sector accounts for a significant percentage of total global energy-related CO2 emissions. Competitive solutions must therefore be found in the building sector to revolutionise energy efficiency and management in buildings. The Horizon 2020 project 'MATRYCS', applies and tests big data approaches for use in building management and policy.

Monitoring data has a variety of uses at different stages of the building life, from the preparation of a renovation to the optimal operation of a building in use. Once a monitoring system has been installed on a building, and the on-site data collection is available, the data needs to be handed over for further purposes, including visualisation.

Extensive research studies in many countries have found gaps between the design intent and real-world operation of buildings, which often lead to much higher energy use in practice than was estimated at design stage. While the reasons for such performance gaps are varied and complex, IEA Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) research projects have recently been making progress in resolving them.

The digitalisation of existing buildings is yet far from being generalised. In consequence, building occupants and owners have limited knowledge and understanding of their building as an energy system, and how their behaviour can impact it. Smart technologies represent a strong lever to increase the energy efficiency in buildings in the short term and with limited investments, in an approach that is complementary to longer-term deep renovation projects.

The current development in building energy efficiency towards nZEB buildings represents a number of new challenges to design and construction.
One of these major challenges is the increased need for cooling in these highly insulated and airtight buildings, which is not only present in the summer period but also in the shoulder seasons and in offices even in midwinter.
