The building sector, when including both construction and operation, is responsible for a significant share of resources and energy consumption and CO2 emissions worldwide. The 2020 Building Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction speaks about global shares of 35% and 38% of the final energy and the emissions, respectively, for the building sector in 2019.

Renewable Energy Sources are becoming increasingly important in the power markets; it is calculated that almost 70 % of the global capacity additions to 2040 will be attributed to renewables. Among these, solar energy is considered to be the most promising because it is clean, abundant, inexhaustible, accessible and does not produce pollutants during its use.

According to recent estimates, the construction sector accounts for 40% of the energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. Decarbonising the building stock has therefore become one of the strategic priorities of the European Union and is among the main pillars of the European Green Deal.

The concept of zero energy settlements is relatively new as, until recently, the focus of EU policy was mainly on the building scale. These days, in view of the ambitious 2050 full decarbonisation target, the revival of the ‘neighborhood’ concept and the need to reduce the initial and operational costs the benefits from designing at the settlement level have been put in the spotlight.

Increasing the energy performance of the EU building stock is key for the EU to achieve its climate and energy goals. However, annually only around 0.2% to 0.3% of buildings across Europe are undergoing deep renovation (aiming at achieving energy savings of at least 60% compared to pre-renovation energy consumption levels) and the average owner or user often considers such actions as too expensive.

ALDREN – ALliance for Deep RENovation in Buildings
The ALDREN Project – ALliance for Deep RENovation in buildings – focuses on increasing the rate and quality of building renovations through the development of performance assessments and certification schemes for deep renovation projects. ALDREN is targeted at office buildings and hotels.
