Can improved air filtration and better ventilation actually help reduce the spread of coronavirus? Or does recirculated air — as from air conditioning systems — help spread the virus? Those have been the million dollar questions really since the start of pandemic.

This hard-stone elementary school is located in Mulhouse in the Alsace region (north-eastern France), near the border with Germany. It is a listed building, since it was built in XXVIII sec as a spinning factory at a time which Mulhouse had an active textile industry and became a school in 1870. It has recently been retrofitted with a project balanced between low energy consumption and heritage preservation, with the availability of a constraint budget.

The 10 houses of Hem are the first homes rehabilitated in France to zero energy and any form of consumption guaranteed for 25 years. Energiesprong is an initiative initiated in the Netherlands in 2013. Vilogia tested in France the first prototypes of this approach on 10 houses built in 1950 in Hem near Lille. Vilogia aims to rehabilitate 500 homes over 5 years using the same method. The Energiesprong method is as follows: using the current technological tools (digital and industrial method) to rehabilitate a dwelling in 3 weeks.

Edward Ng (Chinese University of Hong Kong) recalls the spread of SARS in Hong Kong and reflects on the public health lessons for the built environment. A process of preparation and management is vital for reducing present and future health risks. This is becoming evident in Hong Kong’s recent codes and regulations for urban design and buildings.
